Major Battles of WWI: First Battle of Marne

Footage of the battle of Marne. The French commanders were eager to redeem themselves. Close to 500 men were killed that night.

The first army would cross through Belgium and march to Paris. The Belgian King tried to stop the Germans with his army, to no avail. England was astounded by the breach of contract. Said Germany: "It's just a scrap of paper." The day after the invasion of Belgium England declared war on Germany.

Defenses assembled around Paris but German forces changed direction to encircle the French army—opening themselves for attack along the Marne River.
