Although he never claimed the title, James Madison is often called the "Father of the Constitution" for his critical role in the drafting of the U.S. Constitution. In addition to his remarkable contributions at the Constitutional Convention, Madison, over the course of a life dedicated to public service, was elected to four terms in the House of Representatives, completed eight years as secretary of state, and served two terms as president.
