Samuel Slater: The Father of the American Industrial Revolution

In 1789 Samuel Slater secretly brought British mill technology to America, thereby allowing him to build the country's first water-powered cotton spinning mill. Doing so revolutionized the textile business by shifting from an agrarian system to an industrial one. Historians say that his mill marked the beginning of the American Industrial Revolution.
